J-1 Interns

A J-1 intern is…

  • someone who has not completed their undergraduate degree,
  • is collaborating with a UW-Madison faculty or staff member to enhance the skills and expertise in their academic or occupational fields, through participation in structured and guided work-based training and internship programs and
  • whose internship is NOT a requirement for their graduation.

If you have someone who you believe meets these qualifications, you, as the host department can now work directly with any external approved J-1 Intern sponsor. IFSS does not need to be involved in this process.

If they have completed their bachelor’s degree, you can work with IFSS.

If the internship is required for graduation from their home institution, you can work with the International Student Services office.
