Flying 

Airport Information (MSN / MKE / ORD / MDW): There are several regional airports with easy access to Madison, Wisconsin. 

• MSN – Dane County Regional Airport in Madison, WI 
  • This small airport is located about 5 miles (8km) from UW–Madison. 
  • Calling a taxi, Uber, or Lyft is the easiest way to traverse the city with luggage in tow. Madison is home to several official taxi services including Madison Taxi, and Union Cab. 

• MKE – General Mitchell International Airport in Milwaukee, WI 
  • This is the largest airport in Wisconsin. It is only a 90-minute drive from campus. 
  • Badger Bus / Badger Coaches offers daily express service from General Mitchell Airport in Milwaukee to Madison. 

• ORD – Chicago O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, IL 
  • While much further from UW–Madison, flights to this airport are often much less expensive than flying into Madison directly.
  • The Van Galder / Coach USA bus service offers daily buses between this airport and UW–Madison. Tickets can be purchased from the driver when you arrive, but please review the bus schedule prior to booking your flight. The Bus will drop you off on UW-Madison’s campus at 250 N. Lake Street upon arrival. 

• MDW – Midway International Airport in Chicago, IL
  • A smaller airport on the south side of Chicago, Midway International Airport is an option but is the least conveniently located of these choices.
  • The Van Galder / Coach USA bus service does not typically offer buses from this airport to Madison, WI. 

Driving 

Madison is somewhat centrally located within the BTAA footprint and is easily accessible by major interstate highways from surrounding states. The three main routes to Madison are the following: 

• From the South / East: Madison Route via Illinois (I-90 / I-94 Corridor) 
• From the North / West: Madison Route via Minnesota (I-94 Westbound Corridor) 
• From the South / West: Madison Route via Iowa (US 151 Corridor) 

Local Driving and Travel Considerations 

• Madison is served by I-90, I-94, I-39, US-151, and the US 12/18 Beltline Highway. 

• Allow extra travel time during weekday morning and afternoon rush hours, especially on the Beltline and near downtown Madison and the UW–Madison campus. 

• Road construction can affect travel times, so any major construction projects affecting travel within the Madison area will be updated prior to the conference. 

Boating 

Madison is in Wisconsin, which does border a few of our lovely Great Lakes, and does have our own beautiful Lake Mendota and Lake Monona, but boating is usually not recommended as a transportation option from your institution to ours. If you happen to be sailing or cruising to Madison, though, please let us know and we can update this section.

Walking 

UW-Madison is a very walkable campus, although this can at times be impacted by construction projects. Many walks on campus can take between 5-15 minutes, although some parts of campus are more spread out and might take additional time. Sidewalks and crosswalks are aplenty here but make sure to still look both ways before you cross the streets!

Busing  

The City of Madison has many bus routes in and around campus through metro transit, which has resources for planning your trip (Bus Tracker and Interactive Service Map). You can also visit their webpage on accessible transit in Madison. 

Bus Fares in Madison 

• Campus buses are free for anyone to ride and include the 80-84 routes. 
• Other bus routes require a bus fare (usually $2 for a single adult rider) and is generally cashless around the campus area.  
• For visitors to Madison, the easiest way to pay for the bus is to tap Mastercard, Visa, or Discover credit or debit cards. You can also use Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay virtual wallets. 
• You could also purchase a day pass ticket at one of the Ticket Machine locations nearby. The closest machines will likely be the machines at the East Campus stop (West Johnson Street) or the Orchard Street stop (West Johnson Street).

Cycling 

Biking is very common in Madison, and the campus area is very bike friendly. There are electric bicycles called B-Cycle throughout campus, and they are easy and accessible for visitors! Make sure to follow all bike and pedestrian safety rules on the road, including using hand signals and cycling in bike lanes (not on sidewalks) if you’d like to utilize this transportation method around campus. 

• A single trip pass is $8, and a single day pass is $20 and can be paid through the app. 

• Check the B-Cycle map to see station locations and plan your trip! The map will show stations, number of free cycles at each location, and the number of open dock slots (for returning a bike) at each station.
  • Main locations close to the DoubleTree and Fluno Center include the University & Bassett station and the N. Lake & University Ave station. 
  • Main stations close to the Wisconsin Institute of Discovery (conference venue) and Wisconsin Union Hotel (Union South) include the University & Charter Street station and the Union South station. 
  • Main locations close to the Pyle Center (International Services suite) and Memorial Union include the Langdon & Lake Street station and Memorial Union station. 
  • There are multiple stations along State Street for your convenience! 

Driving and Parking 

Driving around the UW-Madison campus is typically not efficient, partly due to one-way streets and limited parking availability. If you do plan on driving and parking around campus, refer to the following resources:

• Accessible Visitor Parking resources 
• Parking is available at all hotel locations
