Who qualifies as a TN?
The TN nonimmigrant classification permits qualified Canadian and Mexican citizens to seek temporary entry into the United States to engage in business activities at a professional level. You must have a prearranged full-time or part-time job with a U.S. employer, such as UW-Madison. You cannot obtain TN status on your own. Your hiring department/unit must initiate the process with IFSS.

Obtaining TN Status when outside the U.S.
You and your department will be asked to provide documentation about the job offered and about your qualifications (CV, diploma, transcripts, passport, etc.). Once that is reviewed and IFSS agrees that TN status is appropriate, we will provide you with a TN letter. This letter is crafted to specifically detail all the information that is required to obtain TN status.
Canadian citizens: Since you do not need to obtain a visa stamp, you can travel to the U.S. using the TN letter. We also recommend you take with you documentation to prove you are qualified for the job (CV, diploma, etc.). Any fees incurred are your responsibility (currently they are approximately $60 U.S. dollars). Once admitted into the U.S., check your I-94 online to confirm you were admitted in TN status. Email a copy of the I-94 to IFSS. Keep a copy of your I-94 for your records every time you enter the U.S. You may need this document for I-9 verification, driver’s license, etc.
Mexican citizens: You must obtain a TN visa stamp at a U.S. consulate or embassy before you can travel to the U.S. The consulate or embassy will provide a list of what documents to take to the interview. We recommend that you take the TN letter, and any other documentation to prove you are qualified for the job (CV, diploma, etc.). Once admitted into the U.S., check your I-94 online to confirm you were admitted in TN status. Email a copy of the I-94 to IFSS. Keep a copy of your I-94 for your records every time you enter the U.S. You may need this document for I-9 verification, driver’s license, etc. Any visa fees incurred are your responsibility.
Obtaining TN Status when inside the U.S.
If you are currently in the U.S. in another status, IFSS will evaluate and advise your department if the UW can request to change of status (COS) while you remain inside the U.S. This is a lengthier process and requires at least 3 months notice to prepare, file, and obtain an approval, minimum. There may be more extensive documentation required since a COS application must be filed with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). Filing fees for this application are paid by your hiring department.
Transferring TN Status
Since TN status is specific to the employer, transferring TN status does take time and may require an application to be filed with USCIS (if you do not travel). The quickest option to transfer your TN status is to travel outside the U.S. and re-enter on a new TN status for UW–Madison (see Obtaining TN Status when outside the U.S. above).
